In July 1947, debris recovered near Roswell, New Mexico became one of the most studied events in UFO history. The U.S. Air Force later attributed the debris to a classified Project Mogul balloon.

According to reports, rancher W. W. Brazel found unusual debris on his property. The Roswell Army Air Field initially issued a press release mentioning a 'flying disc', later retracted to 'weather balloon'.

Official explanations

The 1994 and 1997 U.S. Air Force reports concluded that the debris originated from Project Mogul, a classified program to detect Soviet nuclear tests.

Alternative hypotheses

Some researchers maintain the hypothesis of a crashed extraterrestrial craft. There is no verifiable scientific evidence supporting this hypothesis.
